Given the increasing pressure to improve crop productivity to feed the growing population, engineering a C4 photosynthetic machinery into C3 plants is considered as an ideal solution given its high light, water and nitrogen use efficiency. Although the basic biochemistry of C4 photosynthesis has been largely revealed, our current understanding of the developmental process, evolution and systems coordination of C4 photosynthesis is incomplete. Our knowledge about the adaptation and acclimation of C4 photosynthesis under diverse environmental conditions is also incomplete, although it is recognized that the natural evolution of the C4 pathway provides important insights into ways by which humanity can engineer C3 crops to express C4 photosynthesis. To enable C4 photosynthesis to better serve humanity, systematic and coordinated research on various areas of C4 biology is urgently needed. Here, we announce a meeting: "2010 Symposium on C4 Plant Biology". This meeting will be held in Shanghai, China, from the 18-20th of Aug in 2010 and will be hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences-Max Planck Society Partner Institute for Computational Biology, located at the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences. This C4 satellite meeting will bring together experts from various disciplines of C4 biology, including biochemistry, evolution, genetic regulation, gene discovery, systems modeling and genetic engineering. |
