XU Guangqi:
Xu Guangwi (1562-1633) was an eminent Chinese Scholar, Modern Scientist, and Humanist from the late Ming Dynasty. PICB is located in the Xu Hui district, which is named after Xu Guangqi, as well as the nearby Xu Jia Hui Square, one of the busiest intersections in Shanghai west of Peoples Square, and the Xu Guangqi park where his tomb and the small, but beautiful Xu Guangqi Museum is to be found.
The Conference:
This year is the 400th anniversary of the publication of Xu Guangqi¡¯s translation of the first six books of Euclid¡¯s Elements of Geometry in 1607.
In order to enhance the appreciation of the work of Xu Guangqi, as well as to mark the 400th anniversary of his publication, the institute organizes a special five-day international conference on Xu Guangqi: An eminent Chinese Scholar, Modern Scientist, and Humanist from the late Ming Dynasty. The conference is jointly organized with other local academic institutions such as the Shanghai Institute for Plant Physiology and Ecology, the Shanghai Observatory, Fudan University, Jiaotong University, East China Normal University, and Tongji University.
The first half of the conference is dedicated to the appreciation of Xu¡¯s work and aims to review his contributions on agriculture, mathematics, astronomy, the Chinese calendar reform, and military strategy. The second half will deal with current research topics in Computational Biology related to (dis-) similarity concepts. In allusion to his essay on Similarity and Dissimilarity in Measurement, this conference is entitled Similarity and Dissimilarity in Computational Biology.
The conference particularly aims to further promote international exchange and scholarly cooperation between China and the West.
