Director: Klaus GERWERT
Department of Biophysics Prof. Klaus Gerwert earned his diploma in physics in Muenster, and obtained his doctorate in biophysical chemistry in Freiburg. In Dortmund at the Max-Planck institute he introduced a novel approach, time-resolved FTIR spectroscopy, to study molecular reactions mechanisms of membrane proteins. Honoured by a Heisenberg fellowship of the German science foundation (DFG) he joined the Scripps research institute in La Jolla, California, USA. Here, he complemented his experimental approach by computational biology. In 1993 he became full professor for biophysics at the Ruhr University Bochum and in 2002 director of the protein centre.
He studies protein-folding, -reaction mechanisms, -interactions and protein networks in the cell in an interdisciplinary approach using biophysical and computational biology methods.

Director: Martin VINGRON
Department of Computational Regulatory Genomics Martin Vingron is a
mathematician by education who has done his PHD
in computational biology at EMBL in 1991. At the
time and for a number of years of postdoctoral
training his research has focused on the
analysis of protein sequences, sequence
analysis, sequence comparison, and molecular
evolution, Methods of discrete optimisation were
used for the design of comparison algorithm and
probability theory was applied to answer
questions of significance of computational
results.
His focus shifted towards the
processing and mathematical analysis of DNA
microarrays. Accordingly, the methods largely
drew on statistical data analysis techniques.
During the last years his research interest lies
in utilizing gene expression data as well as
evolutionary data for the elucidation of gene
regulatory mechanisms.

Director: Philipp KHAITOVICH
Philipp Khaitovich is a biologist by education. He did his undergraduate studies at
the Moscow State University and received his Ph.D. Degree at the University of
Illinois at Chicago in 1999.
He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max
Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany in the group of
Prof. Svante Paabo. He joined the Partner Institute for Computational Biology in
September 2006 as an independent group leader.
His main research interests are:
molecular mechanisms of human cognitive evolution and mechanisms of lifespan
regulation.
