Unveiling Ceremony and first Academic Committee Meeting for Key Laboratory of Computational Biology, CAS

In the afternoon of March 29, 2010, a unveiling ceremony for Key Laboratory of Computational Biology was held in CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology. Prof. Herbert Jaeckle, president of MPG; Prof. Lothar Willmitzer ¨C director of MPI for molecule; Prof. Jiayang LI, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof. Zhibin ZHANG, director of Bureau of Life Sciences; Prof. Yonglong LV, director general of Department for International Cooperation, CAS; Vice presidents of SIBS, Prof. Lin LI and Prof. Xu ZHANG; Prof. Xiaoya CHEN, academician of CAS, director of Academic Committee of the Key Lab; Prof. Changpu SUN, academician of CAS, Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS; Prof. Liqin SHAO, National Remote Sensing Center of China; Prof. Yaping ZHANG, academician of CAS, director of Kunming Institute of Zoology, CAS; Prof. Yufang SHI, director of Institute of Health Sciences, SIBS, CAS; Prof. Jianping DING, SIBS; Directors of PICB, Prof. Li JIN, Prof. A. Dress, Prof. K. Gerwert, Mr. Xuecai WANG, and PIs from PICB attended the ceremony. The ceremony was moderated by Prof. A. Dress.

Prof. ZHANG Zhibin, director of Bureau of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, CAS, proclaimed a permit of the Key Lab. Prof. LI Lin, vice President of SIBS, proclaimed a letter of appointment for Key Lab director. Prof. Herbert Jaeckle, vice president of Max-Planck Society and Prof. LI Jiayang, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences both gave a congratulatory speech and good wishes for future development.

The first Academic Committee Meeting was held after the unveiling ceremony. It moderated by Prof. Xiaoya CHEN, director of the Academic Committee. Firstly, Prof. JIN Li, director of the Key Lab, gave a report about Key Lab. A earnest discussion for building up and development of the Key Lab was taken afterwards. A suggestion from the meeting is 1) to keep the characteristic of the Key Lab. in computational biology. To stick to ¡°dry¡± research mainly and intensify cooperation with other institutes. To make a good effort to provide specific tool and method for life science research. 2) To condense investigative orientation further more and focus on major scientific issue. To bring the investigation to deepness. 3) To make a future plan scientifically and to define a develop map for the Key Lab. To try for being a State Key Lab as soon as possible. 4) The Key Lab should pay a attention to cooperation with national and international range. To find more funds resource independently and actively. To try to take more scientific research mission for State. 5) To build up research team of the Key Lab and find more talented person wherever we can get. To offer better condition to young people for getting a specific training. All in the above is aim to build up a team which is with creative, leading capability for future development in science.

II. About Key Lab

The Computational Biology become a trend in the world currently. More and more scientists pay high attention on it. It also become a very important role in research of life science. There is a consensus that it can be much helpful to life science investigation with computational biology method. By a fund of Chinese Academy of Scienses, Key Laboratory of Computational Biology, CAS was established in 2009. The Key Lab is with a very strong ¡°dry¡± research team. We use mathematics as a main method and high quality computers as a tool to unveiling mystery in life sciences. We also combine with ¡°wet-lab¡± research to focus on aims of Population Genetics, Diseases with Complex Causes£¬Phylogenetic Combinatorics, Spatial Organization of Cellular Protein Networks, Molecular Mechanics and Dynamics of Proteins.

The Key Lab is also a very good platform for scientific cooperation on national and international level. Now, we have cooperation with more than 12 countries and innumerable with internal. We will develop more cooperative relationship to reach newest scientific trend and promote our investigative level.

III. Structure of Key Lab

Key Laboratory of Computational Biology, CAS is running under a director board and a academic committee. Director board is made by SIBS and directors of PICB. Academic committee members are selected from internal scientists. The term of duty will be about 5 years. The director position of the Key Lab is taken by director of supportive institute, PICB. The vice director positions of the Key Lab are taken by vice directors of supportive institute, PICB.
