Title: Population genetics of rapidly recombining bacteria.
Abstract: A few bacterial species, including the stomach colonizing bacterium Helicobacter pylori and the seafood pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus, recombine so rapidly that they have approximately panmictic populations similar to that of humans. I describe how techniques such as chromosome painting can be used to study the genetic structure of these species and shed light on demography, local adaptation and epistasis.
